Carriageworks Farmers Markets, Eveleigh

Bringing talented makers of fresh produce to customers who care about the source of their food, the Saturday morning Bondi Farmers Market is the spot for seasonal vegetables, farm fresh meats, freshly cuaght seafood, baked goods and more. Street food vendors and live entertainment mean you can linger longer after doing your shopping. On Sundays, head to the Bondi Markets to get your hands on clothing, jewellery, vinyl records and vintage homewares (before or after a dip at the beach). The bustling markets have been around for more than 30 years, so are considered a local icon. Both are located at the Bondi Beach Public School at Campbell Parade.

A 10-minute walk from Redfern Station, the award-winning Carriageworks Farmers Market is held every Saturday in an 1880s railway precinct. You'll find seasonal produce from over 70 farmers and artisan food producers across NSW, and you can even learn the stories behind their food. Find organic and biodynamic produce, artisan bread, boutique wines, single-origin coffee, herbal teas, meat, eggs, fresh honey and freshly cut flowers.

Held every Saturday morning, the Paddington Markets started in 1973, as a way to connect local fashion designers, craftspeople, jewellers and artists with customers. Set in the grounds of the heritage-listed Paddington Uniting Church on Oxford Street, the market now has over 150 unique stalls selling fashion, accessories, delicately scented soaps and candles, artwork and more. Head to the Paddington Reservoir afterwards for a dose of greenery.

One of Sydney’s best-known Saturday markets is in the stylish suburb of Glebe. Offering colourful vintage clothes, new clothing designed by locals, and hand-crafted jewellery and accessories, Glebe Markets has over 200 stalls for you to browse and has been running for over 30 years. Relax on the nearby lawns after you’ve shopped up a storm with some delicious food; the market also includes food stalls selling gozleme, kebabs, dumplings, fancy doughnuts and tandoori chicken wraps.

Weekends come alive at The Rocks Markets, where artisanal wares, gourmet street food and harbourside views come together on Sydney's oldest cobblestone streets. Meet local artists and photographers, sample handmade beauty products, or refuel at one of the many food vendors. The markets are within walking distance of the CBD, and the transport hubs of Circular Quay and Wynyard. Afterwards, head to some of Sydney’s oldest pubs or a restaurant overlooking the harbour.

Chinatown’s famous Night Market is one of Sydney’s most popular late-night shopping hotspots come Friday. Open from 4pm to 11pm, up to 50 market stalls pop up along the pedestrian strip of Dixon Street reflecting the culture, creativity and energy of Sydney’s thriving Chinatown precinct. The markets offer visitors the opportunity to taste their way through Asia without leaving Australia. Head there for your dose of delicious street food; the line-up changes regularly, but expect things like dumplings, roti, noodles, pho, curry and takoyaki.

Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Sydney Fish Market, a working fish market located on the harbour in Pyrmont's Blackwattle Bay – just a short distance from downtown Sydney. It's the largest market of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, selling a range of seafood and fresh produce. Also on-site are cafes, restaurants, a wholesale auction and the Sydney Seafood School, where you can join a hands-on cooking lesson, which includes a delicious meal and a glass of wine.

Sydney's iconic Paddy's Markets offer two distinct experiences. Paddy's Haymarket, in the heart of Chinatown, caters to the curious shopper and budget-conscious with a variety of souvenirs, fashion, kids' clothes, accessories, jewellery and more. Meanwhile Paddy's Flemington, just 15km from the CBD, is a foodie's paradise, home to Sydney's largest fresh produce hub.

The Rozelle Collectors Market offers secondhand wares, collectables, fashion, jewellery and antiques. Stallholders have been selling pre-loved wares in the grounds of the Rozelle Public School for over 20 years, and the markets are a brilliant spot for a leisurely browse and a fabulous place to bag some unique finds. Be sure to explore nearby Balmain afterwards, which has an abundance of heritage pubs and lovingly restored cottages.

Each Sunday morning, loyal visitors from all over Sydney trek to Marrickville Organic Food & Farmers Market for organic groceries and seasonal produce, vintage clothes, homewares, plants, and even healing crystals and tarot readings. Be sure to put aside some time to explore the diverse suburb of Marrickville before or after, with its vibrant music and art scene, and long list of breweries.

The Kirribilli Markets offer one of the best city vistas, overlooking the sparkling harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Held on the first and second Sunday and fourth Saturday of every month, the market features over 220 stalls selling vintage and emerging local fashion designers, home and gift wares, arts and crafts, jewellery, plants and a whole lot more. Enjoy live music and international food as you browse.

Head to Manly on Sundays for the Manly Fresh Produce Markets at Sydney Road and Short Street Plaza, a short walk from Manly wharf and ferries. Here you can purchase produce directly from NSW farmers and makers, including organic fruit and vegetables, quality cheeses, olive oils, freshly baked bread and fresh flowers.

The suburb of Summer Hill is the site of the Flour Mill Markets, known for having a focus on sustainability and being entirely plastic free. Held in the forecourt of the historic Mungo Scott building (once a flour mill) every first and third Sunday, this is the place to discover small-batch producers and local makers.

As its name suggests, Ryde Wharf Market has a watery setting – the Parramatta River and the Ryde Bridge form the backdrop for these markets, held on the second and fourth Sunday of the month in Meadowbank’s Anderson Park. The 70-plus stalls hawk fashion, artisanal wares and food, with the latter’s highlights including delectable bureks from Alexander’s Bakery and equally delectable sweet Filipino pastries.

Just over the Harbour Bridge in North Sydney, the Northside Produce Market draws locals on the first and third Saturday of the month. The long list of stall-holders changes, depending on what’s in season, but might include Maria River Distillery, Margin’s Mushrooms, Willowbrae Chevre Cheese and Moonacres Farm. Grab a Broomfields pie or an offering from Brooklyn Boy Bagels with a schmear, and soak the vibrant atmosphere in Civic Park.

Stock up on organic goods in Leichardt every Saturday from 8am to 1pm at the Orange Grove Organic Markets. You’ll also find gourmet goodies from France, Argentina, Turkey and more along with Bowen's bacon and egg rolls, Flour and Stone's lemon cake and Mayan coffee.

Learn about Aboriginal culture at the bi-monthly Blak Markets on Sundays at Bare Island and at The Rocks. With stalls selling authentic arts, crafts, homewares and food from Indigenous stallholders, 100% of the profits go back into Aboriginal communities. The markets also feature a program of events including a smoking ceremony, Welcome to Country, weaving and art workshops, and dance and musical performances.
