Walsh Bay
Views across Sydney Harbour facing west over Walsh Bay
Walsh Bay is a historical port that's been transformed into a cutting-edge performance precinct, with world-class theatres, fantastic restaurants and cool bars. The finger wharves jut out onto the water, right on the edge of Sydney Harbour, and boast stunning views.
Walsh Bay is the home of the arts. Sydney Theatre Company took up official residence in the 1980s and has been a major force in Australian drama since its establishment. The company presents an annual season of diverse drama and dance productions at its own venues, The Wharf Theatres and nearby Roslyn Packer Theatre, and as the resident theatre company of the Sydney Opera House. Performances by the outstanding Sydney Dance Company and Bangarra Dance Theatre also form part of the calendar.
Check out the exhilarating events calendar for all performances, shows and festivals in Walsh Bay, including colourful exhibits during the annual Vivid Sydney. To learn more about the neighbourhood, take one of the self-guided Walsh Bay Walks, which cover heritage, theatre and sculpture.
There are plenty of options for wining and dining around the wharves. Walsh Bay Kitchen offers pre- and post-theatre dining, the pizza at Ventuno is excellent, the glass-walled Pier 8 cafe is great for a casual bite, The Bund does modern Chinese, Lotus Dumpling Bar is the spot for delicious dumplings and Jounieh is contemporary Middle Eastern right on the water.
For fine dining, head to The Gantry at Pier One Sydney Harbour, for panoramic views, walk up the stairway to Millers Point, where the beautifully restored Hotel Palisade offers cocktails and share plates at the rooftop Henry Deane. Meanwhile, if you are want to make sure you are on time for your show at one of the theatres, grab a drink at The Theatre Bar at the End of Wharf.
A great way to get to Walsh Bay is to walk around the foreshore from The Rocks and under the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge. Alternatively, walk along the splendid Barangaroo foreshore for enchanting inner harbour views.
