Mascot’s close proximity to Maroubra means it’s only a 10-minute drive to the beach, allowing you to take a saltwater dip to ward off any jet lag. Ice Zoo in Mascot will also wake you up as you skate laps over the ice rink. If you prefer fresh air, book ahead to play a round at Botany Golf Course or The Lakes Golf Club. There’s also the retro tenpin bowling alley, Manhattan Superbowl.

If you have a few hours to kill between flights, the train trip into the Sydney CBD is about 20 minutes. Hop off at Circular Quay to see the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. If you have a little more time, ferries can take you to Taronga Zoo, Manly, Watsons Bay, Sydney Olympic Park and World Heritage-listed convict sites in Parramatta.

Mascot offers a mix of restaurants serving authentic flavours from around the world. Hong Ha Bakery is an unassuming store on Botany Road that serves incredible banh mi. Sample Asian fusion fare at Anita's, delicious woodfired pizza at La Bufala or authentic Indonesian noodles at the tiny eatery My Delight. The neighbouring suburb of Rosebery reveals more foodie delights such as urban distilleries, food emporiums and funky cafes, such as Three Blue Ducks, a Sydney institution, and Frenchies Bistro and Brewery.

Getting there

Mascot is an easy train ride from the city centre, making it convenient if you want to stay close to the airport but still be able to access the best that Sydney has to offer. There is a range of accommodation options for travellers too.
