The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is an annual event hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. Starting in Sydney on Boxing Day and finishing in Hobart on 2 January, the race is conducted on the waters of Sydney Harbour, the Tasman Sea, Storm Bay and the Derwent River along the way.
Over the past 78 years, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has become an icon of Australia's summer sport, ranking in public interest with such national events as the Melbourne Cup, the Australian Open tennis and the Boxing Day cricket test. No regular annual yachting event in the world attracts such huge media coverage than does the start on Sydney Harbour.
Participants from maxi yachts to weekend racers take part in this event, which starts from Nielsen Park in Sydney Harbour and takes the international fleet 628 nautical miles to the finish line.
