A food & drink guide to Walsh Bay
Henry Deane, Hotel Palisade
Walsh Bay is one of the most scenic places to dine in Sydney, with restaurants perched on heritage-listed finger wharves where the view is just as good as the food. Its offering spans everything from casual cafes to pre- and post-theatre dining and cocktail bars with colonial history.
For casual bites and great coffee, there's Zupano Espresso Bar, Brix & Beans Coffee House and Mr Jones. The aptly named BarCycle is an eatery-meets-bike shop and dishes up breakfast favourites like eggs benedict and BLTs, as well as burgers, pasta and beer during lunch.
The Gantry at Pier One Sydney Harbour is the place to go for modern Australian fine dining by the water and Walsh Bay Kitchen has wonderful pre- and post-theatre menus. Other options include Lotus Dumpling Bar for pan-fried Asian delights and dumplings; Lavana for Spanish tapas and small plates; Ventuno for antipasti, pizza, pasta and fine Italian wines; The Bund for contemporary Chinese and dim sum; and Jounieh for Lebanese cuisine.
Those wanting to indulge in seafood on the water should head to Walsh Bay Crabhouse, a second outpost of the legendary Harry's Singapore Chilli Crab restaurant, or Fish At The Rocks, which has been dishing up freshly shucked oysters and fish of the day specials since 1988.
Walk up the staircase near the Roslyn Packer Theatre to Millers Point, where you’ll find colonial pubs Lord Nelson Brewery and Hero of Waterloo. Next to Barangaroo Reserve is Hotel Palisade, dating back to 1915 – its rooftop bar Henry Deane offers stunning views.
At Pier One Sydney Harbour, drop into Bar One for cocktails curated in partnership with Kings Cross Distillery, as well as fresh seafood and share plates. The Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf is set in a pretty, heritage-listed building with sweeping water views – as its name suggests, it's the ideal spot for a drink before the theatre.
Walsh Bay is a historical port that's been transformed into a cutting-edge performance precinct, with world-class theatres, fantastic restaurants and cool bars. The finger wharves jut out onto the water, right on the edge of Sydney Harbour, and boast stunning views.
