The Sydney International Art Series brings together three must-see exhibitions featuring the legendary Magritte, the visionary Julie Mehretu, and the groundbreaking Cao Fei, exclusive to Sydney.
With an Art Pass, access these extraordinary shows at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. From iconic masterpieces to cutting-edge contemporary art, the Art Pass is your passport to an unforgettable summer of art in Sydney.
Three major exhibitions, one Art Pass.
The Art Pass is available for visits between 30 November 2024 – 9 February 2025.
Magritte is an in-depth retrospective showcasing over 100 works, many never seen in Australia. The exhibition traces his avant-garde beginnings, contributions to surrealism, provocative 1940s pieces, and renowned later works. Explore iconic paintings, rarely seen creations, and René Magritte’s subversive humour, highlighting his profound influence on contemporary visual culture and independent artistic vision.
Experience the monumental works of New York-based artist Julie Mehretu, one of the most significant painters of her generation. Exclusive to Sydney, this first Asia-Pacific exhibition features new and recent large-scale paintings and works on paper from the mid-1990s to today. Mehretu’s art engages with histories of art, architecture, and urgent contemporary issues.
Cao Fei's largest Australian exhibition brings the energy of the modern metropolis to the Art Gallery of New South Wales, featuring two new commissions. The Beijing-based artist, born in Guangzhou, documents China’s rapid urbanization and digital revolutions. Her acclaimed films, photography, and installations explore the disorienting transformations of the new millennium, blending neon, street dance, and pop culture.
