A food & drink guide to Pyrmont

Pyrmont is a harbourside neighbourhood that's home to an eclectic mix of foodie delights, from acclaimed restaurants and classic pubs to charming cafes and natural wine bars. It helps that the area's colonial and maritime heritage means it's also a pretty spot to wander and take in the architecture.

Seafood

The Sydney Fish Market is right on the water. Buy fresh seafood and savour it on picnic tables overlooking pretty Blackwattle Bay, dine at Fisherman's Wharf restaurant or learn how to cook it at Sydney Seafood School. There are also behind-the-scenes tours that operate on weekdays at 6.40am. Still got an appetite? Vic's Meat Market is a butcher and smokehouse located in the market's carpark.

Fine dining

Head to The Star for Japanese at Sokyo, seafood at Flying Fish, steaks and seafood at BLACK Bar & Grill, Italian at Cucina Porto or Chinese at The Century, by the team behind the iconic (and now closed) Golden Century in Chinatown. For an experience you will always remember, book into ELE by Frederico and Karl, a multi-sensory journey through an eight-course degustation incorporating visuals and music. For waterside dining, explore Pyrmont's wharves. Be sure to savour the fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisines at LuMi Dining, close to Wharf 10.

Casual dining

Some of the best bread in town is on the menu at Pioik Bakery, Quick Brown Fox Eatery is the place for coffee and brunch in a pretty sandstone building, and Calla does a one-of-a-kind breakfast. Head to taqueria Nativo for Mexican with a native Australian twist, Ikhwan Café for Malaysian eats, Mashi No Mashi for wagyu ramen, Mister Percy for Spanish pintxos and Yuzu for understated sushi. In May, the annual Pyrmont Festival of Food and Art takes over Pirrama Park.

Pubs & bars

Head to Harris Street for a taste of Pyrmont's pubs. The Terminus is one of the oldest pubs in Sydney, with a menu of elevated pub classics by celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge. Quarryman's Hotel specialises in craft beer (and now has a rooftop bar), and Harlequin Inn and The Dunkirk are also local favourites. Gallon is ideal for a laid-back glass of wine and small bites in a leafy courtyard, and Sydney Wine Centre offers regular wine and cheese tastings, as well as workshops.
