Like its Redfern sister Cafe Oratnek, Cafe Kentaro takes the idea of Japanese fusion and then pushes the limits a little further. You won’t find any smashed avo on toast or pancakes here, but instead a menu of exciting brunch plates like crab omelette, wild mushrooms on toast with miso butter and goat’s cheese, and a ridiculously indulgent Kentaro-style French toast with caramelised banana, peanut butter, cake crumbs, banana chips, kinako and kuromitsu – add on a scoop of ice-cream for good measure.

Oratnek earned a loyal following for its signature katsu sandwich, which Kentaro has imported for its lunch menu, for good reason – it is definitely worth the 15-minute wait it takes to make. You’ll be in heaven biting into the perfectly fluffy white-bread sandwich, filled with pork loin katsu, cabbage, Japanese barbecue sauce and mustard.

The team likes experimenting with matcha in drinks and desserts, so expect great coffee and tea and fun sweet bites.
