Thirlmere Rail Heritage Centre

Attraction - Building and Structure, Educational, Museum, Retail, Shopping

Thirlmere Rail Heritage Centre is located in Thirlmere, near Picton, just over an hour from Sydney in the foothills of the Southern Highlands. It is the home of Australia's oldest and largest railway museum - a step back in time, to an era when everyone travelled by train.

Thirlmere Rail Heritage Centre offers a day of nostalgia for older visitors, and a novel and educational experience for children of all ages.

It boasts the most complete overview of railway heritage to be found in Australia. There are over 40 locomotives and 80 carriages on display, dating from 1865, plus a comprehensive exhibition of railway items and memorabilia, a signals display, an authentic fettler’s shed, and a heritage-listed 1880s railway station.

Trains operate on the Thirlmere Heritage Railway on Sundays and public holidays (generally March to November inclusive, and usually also in January). Trains are steam-hauled on the first and third Sundays of the month, except in fire danger periods.

Within the grounds there are grassed and under-cover picnic and barbecue facilities, and children’s play areas. There is also a kiosk selling refreshments, souvenirs and books.

Guided tours run every Sunday, and can be arranged for groups on other days by appointment. Coaches and groups, social clubs and school groups are welcome.

For an extra special day, visit during the Thirlmere Festival of Steam held on the first Sunday in March.

Thirlmere Rail Heritage Centre is nestled in the heart of the Wollondilly Shire, only minutes from many other attractions including historic Picton and Thirlmere Lakes National Park.
