Step into a bustling Asian street market right in the heart of Sydney. Every Friday, the vibrant Chinatown Night Market takes over Dixon Street in a melting pot of tastes, smells, sights and sounds. Find out more.
From 4-11pm every Friday night, up to 50 market stalls pop up along the pedestrian strip of Dixon Street in the heart of Chinatown cooking up cuisine from all across Asia. The line-up changes regularly, but expect things like dumplings, roti, noodles, pho, curry and takoyaki. Many of Chinatown’s big name restaurants, like East Ocean and Mamak, will run a stall while others will be food truck treats you can’t find anywhere else. Though it focuses primarily on Asia, you can also often find food from further afield, like paella, burgers and southern fried chicken. There are also plenty of sweet treats on offer, from gelato and dragon beard candy to creamy custard tarts.
Once you’ve satisfied your stomach, there’s a lot more on offer at the Chinatown Night Market. Many of the stalls are run by students, up and coming designers, and local Asian artisans showcasing their work. You can pick up everything from custom jewellery and fashion to kitschy phone cases, giant stuffed toys and samurai swords. There is also music playing every night and regular live performances from dance troupes or traditional artists. You’ll be swept up in the buzzy atmosphere.
Join Masterchef alum and Sydney pastry chef Reynold Poernomo on a delicious journey through Chinatown, a vibrant melting pot of cultures and cuisines.
Sydney isn't the only global city with a Chinatown, but this one is bigger, better and boasts more than most thanks to the Chinese immigrants that started arriving in the 1800s. You can find everything here, from small specialist stores and sprawling Asian grocers to noodle bars in hidden food halls and tucked-away fine-dining restaurants. Not to mention lively markets and late-night karaoke.
